A Day in Frankfurt: Coffee, Cathedrals, and Christmas Markets

A Day in Frankfurt: Coffee, Cathedrals, and Christmas Markets

Flight to Frankfurt
Our journey began with an uneventful flight to Frankfurt. We landed at 8:18 AM and by 9:15 AM, we were already dropping our luggage at the hotel. We chose the unassuming Hotel Miramar am Romer, which was within feet of the Römerberg Market.

Morning Adventures
We kicked off our day with a quick latte and some breakfast at Café IM Kunstverein, before exploring the main Christmas Market in Römerberg. The festive atmosphere was infectious, and we couldn’t resist indulging in some holiday shopping.

Next, we hopped on a HOHO (Hop On – Hop Off) bus tour, exploring both the Skyscraper and City routes. Despite the foggy and cold weather, the views of the city were spectacular.

Exploring Historical Sites
Our tour continued with visits to Paulskirche and St. Nicholas Church. One of the highlights was the quirky U-bahn station at Buckenheimer Warte, which looks like a crashed tram.

Market Hopping
From there, we ventured to several markets: Paul Platz Market, Friedrich-Stolz (Pink Market), Hauptwache Market, Mainkai Market, and Robsmarkt. We enjoyed shopping, eating bratwurst, and drinking glühwein. The Ferris Wheel ride added a fun twist to our market tour.

Afternoon Excursions
By 2 PM, we were feeling the cold and fatigue, but we continued on, to combat jet lag. We visited Liebfrauenkirche, checked out the prater noter elevator at the Fleming Hotel, and explored the Goethe House. Our final stop was St. Bartholomew Church, also known as Frankfurt Cathedral.

A Much-Needed Break
We took a break at Hoppenworth and Ploch for an afternoon latte before heading back to the hotel for a shower and a cat nap.

Evening Delights
Dinner was a traditional affair at Wirtshaus am Hühnermarkt. Afterward, we took a leisurely walk through the main market at night, soaking in the festive lights and atmosphere.

Tally for the Day

  • Coffees: 2
  • Cathedrals: 4
  • Christmas Markets: 6
  • Steps: 14,446

Frankfurt has truly charmed us with its blend of history, culture, and festive spirit. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Tips for Future Travelers

  1. Dress Warmly: Frankfurt can get quite cold, especially during the winter months. Layer up to stay comfortable while exploring the city. The fog made the air quite bitter.
  2. Plan Your Market Visits: The Christmas markets can get crowded, so plan your visits early in the day to avoid the rush.
  3. Try Local Delicacies: Don’t miss out on trying bratwurst and glühwein at the markets. They are a quintessential part of the Frankfurt experience.
  4. Comfortable Footwear: With over 14,000 steps in a day, comfortable shoes are a must for all the walking you’ll be doing.
  5. Book Accommodations in Advance: Especially during the holiday season, hotels can fill up quickly. Booking in advance ensures you have a comfortable place to rest after a day of sightseeing.
