A Day of Adventures: Frankfurt to Mainz and Back Again

Our day began in the heart of Frankfurt, at the iconic Main Tower. Despite the dull, grey sky, we ascended to the observation deck for sweeping panoramic views of the urban landscape. It was the perfect way to kick off our adventure, capturing Frankfurt’s vibrancy from above.

From there, we hopped on a train bound for Mainz, a charming city just 40 minutes west. Our first stop was the bustling market in Schillerplatz, alive with the colors and sounds of local vendors and seasonal delights. A quick stroll brought us to Stepenskirche, home to the breathtaking Chagall-stained glass windows—a masterpiece of blue and light that left us in awe.

Next, we wandered into the picture-perfect square of Kirschgarten. Its quaint, timber-framed houses were straight out of a fairytale, and we couldn’t resist pausing at the adorable Le Tosh Cafe for a mid-morning treat. Refreshed and recharged, we continued to Augustinekirche, where the intricate architecture and serene atmosphere took our breath away.

Our journey through Mainz’s spiritual heritage led us to Mainz Cathedral and the Christmas market in Domplatz. The festive cheer was infectious as we explored stalls brimming with handcrafted ornaments and sipped on warm glühwein. The day also held a sobering moment of reflection at St. Christoph Church, its ruins standing as a poignant reminder of World War II’s impact.

We balanced history with hands-on creativity at the Gutenberg Museum and Natural History Museum, where we even had the chance to make our own prints—a unique souvenir to treasure.

By evening, we ended our Mainz tour at Eisgrub-Bräu, indulging in hearty schnitzel and local beer, a true German culinary experience.

Back in Frankfurt, the energy of the city welcomed us once more. Drinks at Occhio d’Oro set the mood, followed by the quirky fun of riding the Paternoster lift. We capped the night by soaking in the festive vibes at the Christmas market along the river, with steaming mugs of glühwein in hand. What a busy day!

Tally for the Day:

  • Coffees: 5
  • Cathedrals: 9
  • Christmas Markets: 8
  • Steps: 38,195
